We Are Fireflies is designed as an installation for the 2023 Degree Show at University of Westminster. The animation is projected onto a sculpture of a head to bring a new dimension of viewing and the sound design brings an intensity to the experience.
I am keen to bring this installation to other galleries and public spaces. Please do get in touch if you have or know of an opportunity I can pursue.
Projections and Postmemory
The installation is also about projections of the mind. From the beginning I wanted to utilise a 3D model to bring this aspect into the installation. In my dissertation I wrote about postmemory, a phrase coined by Marianne Hirsch, who says: “Postmemory describes the relationship that the generation after bears to the personal, collective, and cultural trauma of those who came before-to experiences they ‘remember’ only by means of the stories, images, and behaviors among which they grew up. But these experiences were transmitted to them so deeply and affectively as to seem to constitute memories in their own right”. This has been my experience too. The following quote from Marianne Hirsch also inspired me throughout the making of this film:
“To look toward a future that will know the past deeply but that will not be paralysed by its darkness”
